Energy is a key driver for Africa’s economic growth. The business opportunity linked to developing Africa’s energy infrastructure and the electrification of the continent will be a key focus of the 2020 Africa Energy Indaba. For over a decade, the annual Africa Energy Indaba has served as the connection point for investments into Africa’s energy sector catering to opportunities from small renewable energy projects to billion dollar utility tenders.
Key findings and outcomes from the recent World Energy Council Congress, hosted by the World Energy Council (WEC), will be further discussed in the context of creating deal flows and investment into Africa’s energy sector. Energy Thought Leaders from across the African continent will present and discuss these findings during the Indaba. Supported by the WEC and its local member committee the South African National Energy Association (SANEA); the NEPAD Agency; and the South African Electrotechnical Export Council; the 2020 Africa Energy Indaba program is designed to ensure that Africa’s energy issues are well articulated and communicated.
A focused panel featuring outcomes from the World Energy Congress will be hosted by WEC and SANEA at the Africa Energy Indaba with the topic: “What are the global trends in energy and what does this mean for Africa?”
The African Development Bank’s (AfDB) New Deal on Energy for Africa has set as its target, universal access to electricity across Africa by 2025. To achieve this, 160GW of new on-grid generation and some 75 million new off-grid connections will be needed, through a mix of conventional and renewable energy sources. Interconnectors and the SMART grid will need to be place and government will need to develop enabling policy and all of this needs investors.
Using this foundation, the programme for the Africa Energy Indaba is designed to stimulate discussions between African Government Ministers, Global Investors and private sector participants around the opportunities entrenched in the development of Africa’s energy sector.
Attracting investment into the African energy sector, particularly in renewables, will be a key theme in discussions at Africa Energy Indaba 2020. Other topical issues which will be further deliberated on by Africa’s energy sector role players, include:
